Ask five different vendors which UPS you need, and you may get five different answers — mostly because most vendors lead with whatever they have in stock rather than what actually fits your situation. This guide skips the sales pitch and walks through the real differences between the three UPS topologies sold in India, then maps them to the use cases where each one genuinely makes sense.
The Three Types, in Plain Terms
Offline (standby) UPS runs your equipment directly off utility power most of the time. When the grid fails, it switches to battery — a process that takes roughly 4 to 10 milliseconds. It is the simplest, cheapest, and least protective option.
Line interactive UPS also runs primarily off utility power, but it includes an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) that corrects moderate voltage sags and surges without switching to battery. It only switches to battery for deeper dips, outages, or surges beyond the AVR's correction range. Transfer time is similar to offline, in the 4 to 10ms range, but the AVR means far fewer of those switches actually happen.

Why the Difference Matters More in India
This is not an academic distinction here the way it might be in a country with a stable grid. Indian power conditions include real voltage swings (commonly 160V to 270V in parts of the country), harmonic distortion from industrial and DG-set-heavy areas, and frequent short interruptions. That means:
Offline UPS systems in India spend more time switching to battery than the same units would in a stable grid market, which shortens battery life faster than buyers expect.
Line interactive UPS systems with a wide AVR correction range handle most of this without battery cycling, which is why they are the practical sweet spot for a large share of Indian SME and home-office use.
Online UPS systems remove the variable entirely, which is why they are mandatory, not optional, in environments where even brief interruption is unacceptable.

Cost Difference: What You Are Actually Paying For
As a rough rule of thumb across the Indian market, online UPS systems cost 1.5x to 3x more than a line interactive unit of the same kVA rating, with the gap widening at higher capacities. That premium buys three things: the double conversion topology itself, a typically larger and more sophisticated battery charging system, and — in good units — IGBT-based power electronics rather than older designs.
The mistake we see most often is buyers either overspending on online UPS for a handful of desktop PCs that did not need it, or underspending on line interactive for a server rack that absolutely did. Both mistakes are avoidable by being honest about what is actually connected to the UPS, not just the total load in watts.
A Quick Self-Test
Ask these three questions about what you are protecting:
Would a 4-10 millisecond interruption cause a reset, error, or data loss? If yes, you need online.
Is the equipment life-critical, safety-critical, or transaction-critical? If yes, you need online.
Is the input voltage at your site known to swing significantly, and is the equipment sensitive to that swing even when running on grid power? If yes, you need at minimum a line interactive UPS with a wide AVR range, and ideally online.
If you answered no to all three, line interactive is very likely sufficient, and spending more on online UPS is money better spent on better battery capacity or a service contract instead.
What to Check Regardless of Which Type You Choose
Input voltage window. Whether you choose line interactive or online, ask for the actual voltage range the unit operates within before it has to call on the battery (for LI) or before it hits its tolerance limit (for online). A wider window means fewer battery cycles and longer battery life in Indian conditions.

The Bottom Line
There is no universally "best" UPS topology — only the right one for what you are protecting. Offline UPS is rarely the right answer for anything beyond the most basic, non-critical load given how cheap line interactive has become. Line interactive is the practical default for offices, retail, and home use. Online (double conversion) is non-negotiable for servers, hospitals, banks, industrial controls, and most government procurement.
