A UPS that is correctly sized and specified can still underperform if the installation itself is done poorly — ventilation, electrical connections, and site conditions all affect real-world reliability as much as the unit's own specifications. This checklist covers what to verify before and during installation.

Before Installation: Site Preparation

Confirm floor loading capacity, particularly for larger UPS units and any associated battery cabinets, which can be substantially heavier than the UPS electronics alone — this is especially important for upper-floor or raised-floor installations.

Verify ventilation and clearance. Every UPS has manufacturer-specified minimum clearance requirements around the unit for airflow, and a minimum/maximum ambient temperature operating range. Confirm the installation room can maintain this range, particularly in non-air-conditioned utility rooms in warmer parts of the country, and that nothing will be stacked or stored against the unit's ventilation openings after installation — a surprisingly common cause of premature failure that has nothing to do with the equipment itself.

Check for dust and contamination sources. Industrial environments in particular (see Industrial UPS for Manufacturing Plants) may need a sealed enclosure option or a cleaner sub-room specifically for power equipment, rather than placing the UPS directly on a dusty plant floor.

Confirm electrical supply matches UPS input requirements — voltage, phase configuration (single vs three-phase), and available supply capacity at the installation point, verified against the UPS's actual input specification, not assumed from the building's general electrical capacity.

Before Installation: Sizing and Specification Re-Check

Before the unit arrives, do a final confirmation that the UPS being installed actually matches your current load requirements — equipment changes between order and delivery (a common gap, particularly for larger institutional projects with longer lead times) sometimes mean the original sizing calculation (see How to Calculate UPS Capacity) needs a final sanity check against what will actually be connected.

Installation Day: Electrical Connections

Dedicated circuit and correct breaker sizing. UPS input should generally be on a dedicated circuit, with breaker sizing matched to the manufacturer's specification, not just "whatever is available nearby."

Correct grounding. Proper earthing is both a safety requirement and, for sensitive electronic loads, important for power quality — verify grounding meets both the UPS manufacturer's specification and applicable Indian electrical code requirements.

Battery connection verification. For units shipped with batteries disconnected for transport safety (common practice), confirm correct polarity and secure connection before first power-on — an incorrect battery connection at this stage can damage the unit immediately.

Output wiring matched to connected load. Confirm output wiring and any downstream distribution (PDU, distribution board) is rated for the UPS's full output capacity, not just the load connected on day one.

Commissioning Steps

Initial power-on under no-load or light-load conditions where possible, to verify basic functionality before connecting full critical load.

Battery charge verification — confirm the UPS is correctly charging the battery and reporting accurate charge status before relying on it for backup capacity.

Load bank or actual-load test of backup time, to confirm real backup time matches expected calculation, rather than assuming the nameplate figures translate directly without verification.

Alarm and monitoring system check — deliberately trigger a test condition where safely possible (or review with the installing technician) to confirm alarms display and, if applicable, remote monitoring/SNMP reporting functions correctly before relying on it. Documentation handover. Confirm you receive commissioning report, warranty documentation, BIS certification copy, and a fault code reference guide as part of installation completion — not items to chase down later.

Post-Installation: First 30 Days

Monitor more closely than you would in steady-state operation during the first month — this is when installation issues (loose connections, inadequate ventilation effects, sizing miscalculations) tend to surface, if they exist, before settling into normal long-term operation.
