A UPS is only as reliable as the room it lives in. Heat, poor airflow, battery gassing, and inadequate fire protection are quiet killers of UPS and battery life — and occasionally the cause of serious incidents. This guide covers the practical essentials of designing a safe, reliable UPS room.
Heat Is the Enemy
Every UPS dissipates some power as heat, and so do batteries. That heat must be removed or the room temperature climbs — and battery life roughly halves for every ~8-10°C above 25°C. Estimate the heat load (a portion of the UPS throughput plus battery losses), then size ventilation or cooling to hold the room near 25°C. Paradyne's online UPS operates up to 50°C, but batteries strongly prefer cooler, stable conditions.
Airflow and Clearances
Provide clear intake and exhaust paths; don't block UPS vents.
Maintain manufacturer-specified clearances around the unit for airflow and service access.
Avoid recirculating hot exhaust back into the intake.
Battery Safety
Lead-acid batteries can release hydrogen, especially on boost charge. In larger installations this requires adequate ventilation to keep any hydrogen well below hazardous concentration, plus spill containment for flooded types and sensible spacing. Fire Protection
UPS rooms should follow your facility's electrical-room fire norms: appropriate detection, suitable extinguishing provision for electrical fires, and separation from combustible storage. Coordinate with your fire-safety consultant and the relevant codes for your building class.
Earthing and Cabling
Design clean earthing into the room (see UPS earthing and grounding), route DC battery cabling short and correctly sized, and keep power and signal cabling separated. Good cable discipline reduces noise and simplifies maintenance.
