A 5 kVA UPS is the workhorse size for small server rooms, clinics, branch offices, and compact industrial control panels in India. It is big enough to matter and small enough that buyers often under-spec it. This guide covers what a 5 kVA online UPS actually handles, the battery options behind it, how to size backup, and what drives the price.

What a 5 kVA UPS Powers

At an output power factor of 0.8, a 5 kVA online UPS delivers roughly 4 kW of real power. Typical loads:

  • A small server rack — a few servers, a switch, and a storage array.

  • A clinic or diagnostic room with imaging peripherals and workstations.

  • A branch office with 15-20 PCs, networking, and billing terminals.

Battery Options and DC Bus

Sizing Backup Time

Decide how long you need to ride through an outage or bridge to a generator. A few minutes for safe shutdown needs a modest battery; an hour of runtime at full load needs a substantial bank and the floor space and ventilation for it. Be honest about partial-load behaviour — most 5 kVA installs run well below full load, which extends backup but also means you should size batteries for the real load, not the nameplate.
