For a small office or a home setup in India, a 1 kVA or 2 kVA UPS is usually the sweet spot — enough to keep computers, a router, and a few essentials running through the daily voltage dips and short outages that are routine across most of the country. The challenge is that "1 kVA" on a box tells you very little about whether it will actually carry your load for the time you need. This guide breaks down what these sizes really run, how long they last, and what to check before you buy.

What a 1-2 kVA UPS Actually Runs

UPS capacity is rated in volt-amperes (VA), but your equipment consumes watts. Because of power factor, a 1 kVA UPS does not deliver 1000 watts — it typically delivers around 600-800 watts of real power. A practical picture:

  • 1 kVA — 2-3 desktop PCs with monitors, a router and switch, a small printer on standby. Comfortable for a home office or a small reception desk.

  • 2 kVA — 4-6 workstations, networking gear, a billing terminal, or a small server plus peripherals.

Line-Interactive vs Online at This Size

At 1-2 kVA you have two sensible choices:

Backup time depends far more on the battery than on the UPS rating. A 1 kVA unit on a single 12V/7Ah battery may give only 10-20 minutes at a light load — enough for a safe shutdown, not for riding through a long outage.
