IEC 62040 explained in plain language: the UPS standard's VFI/VI/VFD classification, performance and EMC parts, and why it matters for buyers.
Technology Explainers
If you have read a UPS datasheet or a government tender, you have probably seen "IEC 62040" or the classification "VFI" quoted without explanation. IEC 62040 is the international standard family that defines what a UPS is, how it performs, and how safe and electromagnetically clean it must be. Understanding it turns a confusing spec sheet into a clear basis for comparison.
The Three Parts That Matter
The IEC 62040 series has three core parts:
62040-1 — Safety: general and safety requirements for UPS construction.
62040-2 — EMC: electromagnetic compatibility, so the UPS neither emits nor is disturbed by interference.
62040-3 — Performance and test methods: this is the one buyers care about most — it defines the performance classification.
VFI, VI, VFD: The Classification
IEC 62040-3 classifies UPS by how the output depends on the input, using a three-letter code:
VFI (Voltage and Frequency Independent) — the output is independent of both input voltage and frequency. This is online double conversion — the highest protection class. Paradyne's online UPS is a VFI design.
VI (Voltage Independent) — output voltage is regulated (e.g., by AVR) but frequency follows input. This is line-interactive.
VFD (Voltage and Frequency Dependent) — output follows the input. This is offline/standby.
For the practical buyer's view of these topologies, see online vs line-interactive vs offline and what is double conversion UPS.
How It Connects to Indian Procurement
In India, the BIS standard IS-16242 aligns with the IEC 62040 framework. When a tender asks for a "VFI online UPS, BIS certified under IS-16242," it is specifying both the performance class and the certification — exactly the combination Paradyne's online range is built and tested to.
What to Take Away
VFI = online double conversion = the strongest protection class.
Ask which class (VFI/VI/VFD) a UPS is — it tells you the real protection level.
Pair the class with BIS / IS-16242 certification and NABL test reports for procurement.
