The Core Difference: Transfer Time

The defining distinction is how fast the device takes over when the grid fails:

  • Inverter (home inverter) — switches from mains to battery with a noticeable changeover (commonly tens of milliseconds or more). Fine for fans, lights, and TVs that don't mind a brief blink.

  • UPS — designed for a fast, seamless transfer. A line-interactive UPS transfers in around 3-5 ms; a true double-conversion online UPS has zero transfer time because the load always runs off the inverter.

Computers, servers, and networking gear can reboot on the delay a home inverter introduces — which is why they need a UPS.

Waveform Quality
