The Three UPS Topologies

Every UPS is one of three types, distinguished by how the load is fed and how fast it transfers to battery:

  • Offline / standby (VFD) — the load runs on raw mains; on failure it switches to the inverter with a brief gap. Cheapest, least protection. Fine for non-critical home/office basics.

  • Line-interactive (VI) — the load runs on mains through an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) that corrects voltage without using the battery; it transfers to battery on failure in about 3-5 ms. A good balance for offices and lighter loads.

  • Online / double conversion (VFI) — the load always runs off the inverter, fully isolated from the input, with zero transfer time. The gold standard for critical loads.

How They Compare on What Matters

  • Transfer time — offline: a noticeable gap; line-interactive: ~3-5 ms; online: zero.

  • Protection level — offline: basic; line-interactive: voltage regulation; online: full isolation and conditioning.

  • Power quality — only online fully rebuilds the waveform, holding output THD low regardless of input.

  • Efficiency — line-interactive can be slightly more efficient at light load; online trades a little efficiency for complete protection.

  • Best for — offline: basic loads; line-interactive: offices/PCs; online: servers, medical, industrial, banking, telecom.

Waveform: Pure vs Modified Sine

UPS vs Inverter

In India "inverter" and "UPS" are used interchangeably, but they are not the same. A home inverter switches to battery with a noticeable delay and often a modified sine wave — fine for fans, lights, and TVs. UPS vs Generator

This is not either/or — critical sites need both. A UPS provides instant, clean power but only for the battery's duration; a diesel generator provides long-duration power but takes seconds to start and its raw output is not clean enough for sensitive loads. A Decision Framework

Work through these in order:

  1. Can the load tolerate a brief blink? No → UPS (not a home inverter). Servers/medical/industrial → online.

  2. Is the equipment sensitive? Yes → ensure true sine wave output.

  3. Is the grid unstable at your site? Yes → favour online (full isolation, wide input) over line-interactive.

  4. Do you need long-duration backup? Yes → pair the UPS with a generator.

  5. Is downtime very costly? Yes → add redundancy with a static transfer switch.

There is no single "best" UPS — only the right one for your load.
