Buying a UPS in India should be simple, but it rarely is. Between confusing topologies, inflated kVA numbers, power-factor sleight of hand, and tenders written in standards jargon, it is easy to buy the wrong thing — usually one that is undersized, under-protected, or non-compliant. Step 1: Understand the Three UPS Types

Every UPS falls into one of three topologies, and choosing the right one is the most consequential decision you will make:

  • Offline / standby — load runs on raw mains, switches to battery on failure with a brief gap. Cheapest, least protection.

  • Line-interactive — load runs on mains through an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) that corrects voltage without going to battery; transfers to battery on failure (typically 3-5 ms). Good for offices and lighter loads.

  • Online / double conversion — load always runs off the inverter, fully isolated from input, with zero transfer time. The gold standard for critical loads.

Step 2: Match the Topology to Your Load

The rule of thumb: the less your equipment can tolerate a disturbance, the further up the topology ladder you go.

  • Home / basic office (PCs, networking) — line-interactive, or pure sinewave for sensitive gear.

  • Servers, medical, lab, industrial control, banking, telecom — online double conversion, no compromise.

Step 3: Size It Correctly

This is where most purchases fail. The critical insight: kVA is not kW. The two are linked by power factor:

kW = kVA × power factor. A UPS rated at a 0.8 power factor delivers 0.8 kW of real power per kVA — so a 10 kVA unit gives about 8 kW, not 10 kW.

The sizing method:

  1. Total your real load in watts (kW).

  2. Convert to kVA: kVA = kW ÷ UPS rated power factor.

  3. Add 20-30% headroom for startup inrush, growth, and to avoid running near 100%.

  4. Size the battery separately for your required backup time.
